ArcGIS Online HTTP update tools
/On the 8th of December 2020, ArcGIS Online will change to enforce HTTPS Only. This means HTTP support in ArcGIS Online will be discontinued and references to HTTP URLs will no longer work in ArcGIS Online. You can find some more information about this change here.
This article will introduce some of the methods and tools available for you to find and update your ArcGIS Online’s HTTP references so that you are ready for this change. You can find some more details about the tools here.
Tool to Update Layers to HTTPS
Login to ArcGIS Online and from Contents > select your Web Map > select the Settings tab > scroll down to Web Map section > select Update Layers to HTTPS.
This will list both the Layers that have been updated to HTTPS, and those that cannot be updated. For those that cannot be updated, the server providing the layer may need to be updated to support HTTPS. If the layer is your own this may mean adjusting your server to support HTTPS, else if the layer is not your own please contact the data provider.
Tool to Update References
This tool can be used to bulk update a root FQDN from HTTP to HTTPS. Typically these would be a references to your own ArcGIS Server such as http://myserver.domian.com, and the tool could update all references to https://myserver.domian.com
Login to ArcGIS Online and from Contents > select your Web Map > select the Settings tab > scroll down to Web Map section > select Update References.
Note, this tool does not check whether the Server supports HTTPS before making the change.
ArcGIS Online Security Advisor
The ArcGIS Online Security Advisor offers a HTTP Check tool.
To access the HTTP Check tool, use your ArcGIS Online account to sign-in to the ArcGIS Online Security Advisor here (note: IE is not supported).
From Application Modules select HTTP Check, and press Scan to produce a report.
For HTTP references in a Web Map you can select “Take me to Update Layers”.
For HTTP references in other item types you will need to update the HTTP references manually in ArcGIS Online. To assist you in locating them you can select “view”, then use Ctrl-F and search for “HTTP:”
Allow access to the organisation through HTTPS only
When you are confident you have updated all your HTTP references, you should switch your ArcGIS Online to HTTPS Only. To do this go to Organisation, Settings, Security, and switch on “Allow access to the organisation through HTTPS only”
IMPORTANT: After changing your ArcGIS Online to HTTPS Only, you should test your site to confirm it still works as expected. If you find any problems that you cannot resolve, please contact Esri UK Technical Support
