Writing your survey responses directly to a Feature Service

Since the release of version 4 of LocalView Fusion it has been possible to write the results of a survey directly to a Feature Service published in ArcGIS Server.

Using a Feature Service allows you to edit features across the web and not have to worry about configuring Geoprocessing tools to perform the edits for you.

Creating the Feature Service and adding it into LocalView

Full details of how to create and publish a Feature Service can be found in the help pages for your version of ArcGIS Server.

Version 10, 10.1 & 10.2 help.

To publish as a Feature Service ensure that you select the option for “Feature Access”

Version 10:

Version 10.1 & 10.2:

Once published you will have a Feature Service endpoint in your server as well as the Map Service. It will have a URL similar to http://<MachineName>/ArcGIS/rest/services/Survey_Features/FeatureServer

In LocalView Fusion you add this Feature Service in the same away as you add your normal Map content, choosing Feature as the service type and entering the URL as above.

Connecting your Feature Service to a Survey

Create your survey as normal. The one thing you must do is make sure that your location question is mandatory. Prior to version 4.3 this would only work with a Map Location but a change has now been made to allow you to also use it in conjunction with an Address Entry.

When setting your actions you now need to choose “Write to Feature Service”

This will then allow you to choose the Feature Service you wish to write to and the layer within that Feature Service.

There will be a “Feature Geometry Field” which will prepopulate with your Location question. (If this is blank it is likely that you forgot to set the Location question as mandatory).

The screen will also give you a list of all of the fields available from your Feature Service with a corresponding dropdown list which will allow you to choose which of your survey questions match these fields.

Once you have matched the answers to the fields, click OK and Save your survey.

When your survey is submitted a feature will be written directly to that Feature Service.
