Esri UK are preparing for the OS AddressBase Schema Changes

The Ordnance Survey have announced schema changes to the AddressBase products. These schema changes will impact Esri UK customers who are using the AddressBase products within the ArcGIS platform. There will be new releases of Esri UK’s Productivity Suite and LocatorHub products to handle data in the new schema. Customers will be required to upgrade to the new versions if they are using this data and want to continue to apply updates.

LocatorHub locators can now be configured to act as ArcGIS locators

LocatorHub locators can now be used in ArcGIS Online and other areas of the platform. For example AddressBase (any level) could be used for map navigation, geocoding or reverse geocoding inside ArcGIS Online. LocatorHub 5.2 SP2 includes the enhanced ArcGIS Compatible REST Service which enables users to configure LocatorHub locators in ArcGIS Online to look and act like ArcGIS Locators. Once the locators are configured in ArcGIS Online they can also be used in; Maps for Office, Maps for Dynamics, Portal, Maps for Sharepoint, Esri Maps for IBM Cognos, Flex API, and the new Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS.

Unable to validate Order Numbers in Productivity Suite?

One of the most common errors seen when using the Productivity Suite OS Data Converter is shown in the below example, relating to the inability to validate the Order Number:

The error is thrown because Productivity Suite is unable to process data with different order numbers at the same time. Productivity Suite is able to process multiple datasets/ files with the same order number, but does not support the mixing of order numbers during a single processing session. If you have data with different order numbers, you will be required to process them in separate order number batches.

The order number is the first set of digits in the file name:

E.g. 86106-HP5505-25i7.gz

Has the LocatorHub toolbar vanished in Productivity Suite 3.0?

You may be aware that Esri UK have recently released Productivity Suite v3.0 and Crime Analyst v2.3 for ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop.  

Productivity Suite 3.0 contains a number of bug fixes and stability improvements, and has also been streamlined based on customer feedback. As part of this streamlining, the LocatorHub toolbar has been removed along with various other features and functions that have either been superceded by core ArcGIS for Desktop capabilities, or are no longer needed (please refer to the release notes for full details).

Customers wishing to connect to their local LocatorHub services in ArcGIS 10.1 for Desktop should therefore use the Esri UK Online Services toolbar.

NB It’s important to note that you must have a full license of LocatorHub to connect in the way described below (the runtime licenses of LocatorHub included in applications like LocalView Fusion don’t allow connection via the Esri UK Online Services toolbar).

To connect to a LocatorHub service you should now use the following workflow:

  •  Download the Esri UK Online Services toolbar

 

  • Unpack the contents of the ZIP file to the desired location
  • Double-click the add-in (ESRIUK.Services.ArcGIS.esriAddIn) to install it

  • Select Services > Configure Locators
  • Select Add
  • Select Local Server entering the URL of your service (e.g. http:///locatorhub/locatorhub.svc)
  • Select Connect (having entered any Authentication information as required)
  • Select the required Locator from the dropdown list

  • Click OK
  • You should now be able to use the Locator service from the Esri UK Online Services toolbar

How to: Install Productivity Suite v2.0 to the All Users Profile

Here in Technical Support, a common query we often get is about Productivity Suite 2.0 and the way the software has been installed. Users may comment that they are unable to use a specific tool within the extension, whilst another user, on the same machine, can use the tool without a problem. This is because the software has only been installed to a specific User Profile, and not the All Users Profile.

This issue may be easily identified by receiving an error message that lists many .dll files as not available, e.g.:

Directory path: C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\bin
- 3dAnalystUtil.dll Version not available
- 3DSymbols.dll Version not available
- 3DSymbolsLib.dll Version not available

Etc…

The following procedure describes how to install Productivity Suite 2.0 to the All Users Profile (NB You will need to be logged in as an administrator with full admin rights to the machine):

  1. Uninstall the current installation of Productivity Suite
  2. Open Command Prompt and change to the directory containing the .msi installer
  3.  cd C:\Temp  
    
  4. Enter the following command to install Productivity Suite 2.0 to the All Users Profile:

 

 MSIEXEC /i ProductivitySuiteVersion.msi ALLUSERS=1 /qb  

 

The application should be successfully installed to the All Users Profile. Once successfully installed, the latest Service Pack should be applied, which can be downloaded from:

http://www.esriuk.com/software/arcgis/productivitysuite/download

NB This issue affects only Productivity Suite 2.0. The Productivity Suite 2.1 installer now has an option to install to either the Current User or All Users of the machine.

How to: Access the Esri UK Product Licence Manager for Productivity Suite v2.1

The EsriUK Product Licence Manager is installed as part of the main installation for Productivity Suite 2.1 for ArcGIS Desktop 10. It is used to licence Esri UK products such as Productivity Suite and Crime Analyst.

 

It can be accessed in one of three ways:

Via the Start Menu:

Start > All Programs > Productivity Suite 2.1 > Licence Manager

If you are unable to access the Licence Manager via this route (i.e. it does not appear) then you should install the latest Service Pack, which may be downloaded from http://www.esriuk.com/software/arcgis/productivitysuite/download.

Via ArcMap 10:

a)     Open ArcMap 10

b)    Ensure that the Productivity Suite 2.1 extension is enabled

  1. Select Customize > Extensions
  2. Ensure Productivity Suite is checked and click Close

c)     Click Productivity > About Productivity Suite

d)    Select View Licence

Via Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files (x86)\ESRIUK\ProductivitySuite\bin\PSLicenceManager.exe

LocalView Fusion - An Update from the Development Team

I thought I would post a quick update on what the LocalView team have been up to over the summer, partly to give some sneak previews of new functionality and templates we're working on, and partly to give a glimpse of our software engineering process.

New Stuff

We're just adding the final polish to our next release of LocalView Fusion, which will be known as Service Pack 5. It actually contains some pretty big changes:

 

  • New content type: we've extended the types of content that can be managed and published through the LocalView platform, to include Geoprocessing Tasks. We've done this to expand the range of functionality that LocalView templates can support, and we've tied the GP Tasks to the Survey template so that they integrate a bit more tightly.
  • New functionality - for example, we've added the ability to switch basemaps in GeoWindows (as long as the other basemaps are in the same spatial reference system).
  • New templates: the LVF development team have been working a lot with jQuery and the Compact API, and now consider this to be the best option for tight integration for example when embedding maps and gazetteers within CMS templates. So we've added two new "Embeddable" templates that come as both standalone GeoWindows or jQuery plugins. The plugins will load their configuration direct from LVF, so tightly-embedded CMS maps and gazetteers can now be updated by LocalView content publishers without a developer having to update the implementation. We've also added a template based on the ArcGIS Viewer for Flex (version 2.3) - extended to include our own Legend, Printing and Gazetteer controls, plus a query builder on top of the editing, geoprocessing, and drawing widgets.
  • And of course, a healthy dose of Performance improvements and bug fixes.

We're on target to get everything polished and tested, and the product documentation updated, by late September.

How LocalView is made

We have a pretty small team making LocalView, usually about 4 people. We rely heavily on automation, for example we use Cruise Control.Net to run our automated build servers so that we always have installers available to test any changes we make. We run our projects using Scrum, an Agile methodology that focusses on productivity, making small incremental changes, and delivering fully tested, functioning software to a series of short (2-4 week) deadlines.

Under the hood, there is quite a lot that goes into making LocalView: about 25 Visual Studio solutions get built, we make 3 different installers (32 bit, 64 bit and cloud) using Wix, and support 4 databases (Oracle, SQL Server 2008, PostGres and for our multi-tenancy environment, Amazon RDS), which requires a battery of virtual machines for each combination of operating system, ArcGIS version and database that we need to test. And then there are the browser versions....we have no "magic bullet" for testing in multiple browsers, we use Virtual Machines running Windows XP for IE6, IE7 and IE8, and all the team have the latest versions of Chrome and Firefox, as well as IE9, on their laptops.

We use Team Foundation Server for source control, and we currently manage the codebase in three branches: mainline development, the last major release (for hotfixes), and a cloud branch. Breaking changes go into the mainline, or a new branch as a release approaches (which then becomes the mainline) but the release branches have to stay stable - we manage changes by merging code between the mainline and release versions.

What's Coming Next

Because we work in short sprints using Scrum, our priorities can be set and changed with very short notice. So I can never say what's coming in the next release until we get close to finishing it. I can say that we will be starting work on it in October though!

LocalView Fusion Service Pack 5

After 2 solid months of development, LocalView Fusion Service Pack 5 is in the final stages of testing and will be available for download next week (customers will get an email containing the download details). The release includes two completely new GeoTemplates plus a list of product improvements. This post describes a few of the headline features that will be in SP5.

New Embeddable Map GeoTemplate

Customers with the Community bundle will get the new Embeddable Map GeoTemplate. This provides a simple way to create and embed GIS viewers into your website using very few lines of HTML and CSS, reducing development time without sacrificing functionality. Plus you don't need to have any experience in Esri programming to add an Identify tool, address search or legend - this can all be set up in the provisioning site.  Here’s what it looks like in action (screenshot taken from our main Esri UK website):

 

New ArcGIS Viewer for Flex GeoTemplate

This GeoTemplate will be available if you have the Business bundle of LocalView Fusion. It is a modified version of Esri’s sample Flex application which we have integrated into the LocalView Fusion platform. So in addition to the rich functionality already available in the original application (advanced attribute searching, editing, time-slider, etc), we have included our UK address searching functionality, printing suite and full legend/layer control. Improvements and bug fixes

As well as the new GeoTemplates we have been listening to your feedback and have added a range of new options, services and fixes to the system. Here is a sample of some of them;

  1. Multiple basemaps (Web Publisher, Navigator, Embeddable Map and AGS Viewer for Flex).
  2. Web Publisher: Property level reverse geocoding.
  3. Enhanced support for WMS services.
  4. The ability to print from secured map services.
  5. Testing environments extended to include new browsers (Chrome and IE9) and server environments extended to include Oracle 11g.
  6. Survey actions updated to use the GeoProcessing content type.
