How to Troubleshoot problems with Esri Maps for Office

This article describes some of the troubleshooting procedures we'd take you through in Technical Support if you are having problems with Esri Maps for Office, such as the application crashing.

1. Do you have the correct version of Esri Maps for Office downloaded?
The x-bit of Esri Maps for Office should match the x-bit of Microsoft Office, not the x-bit of your machine. This link will explain how to find the x-bit of Microsoft Office your machine is running.

2. Does Esri Maps for Office have the correct address for the ArcGIS Connection?
Go to File > Esri Maps > and the Esri Maps Configuration should look similar to this:

3. Check if Esri Maps for Office is enabled within the Excel settings. To do this go to File > Options > Add-ins > Choose Disabled Items for the Manage field and click Go. If you see Esri Maps in the dialog, click on it and enable it.

4. Another way to check if Esri Maps for Office is enabled within Microsoft Excel settings is to go to File > Options > Add-ins > Choose COM Add-ins for the Manage field and click Go.

If the Esri Maps for Office extension ticked in the COM Add-ins dialog, check the load behaviour which is displayed underneath the location of the install.

If the Load Behaviour says Unloaded, please go to step 5

5. If the Load Behaviour status is Unloaded as seen in step 4, you will need to edit some Registry Settings on your machine

**Please note that the steps below require an administrative account on the machine and  should  be carried out with caution, as incorrectly editing the registry can cause system instability.

To do this go to Start > Run… > Enter regedit and click OK > The Registry Editor window will open > Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\Esri Maps for Office\LoadBehavior

Double Click on the LoadBehavior file to see what value it is.
  • If the LoadBehavior value is 0, this means the extension is Unloaded, therefore it will not start automatically with Microsoft Office.
  • If the LoadBehavior value is 1, this means the extension is Loaded, but it does not load automatically and has to be loaded manually in Microsoft Office.
  • If the LoadBehavior value is 2, this means the extension is Unloaded. The user has to load it manually, when this happens the LoadBehavior changes to 3.
  • If the LoadBehavior value is 3, this means the extension is Loaded. Microsoft Office loads the add-in automatically when it starts up. If an error occurs the LoadBehavior changes to 2.

Change the Value in the LoadBehavior to the relevant value and click OK.

After you’ve changed the registry, reboot your machine and check whether Esri Maps for Office is enabled by going to the COM Add-ins as described in step 4.
